I am constantly swapping out the contents of my various bags to test new things and to try and find that perfect balance between weight, utility, and comfort. Part of this swapping of gear is getting out on the trail and actually using the bag! There is a big difference between the theoretical and the practical.
I can’t encourage this enough, get out and use your bag, even if it is just for a day hike. You will learn a ton about your gear, and possibly about yourself as well.
Anyway, on to the tip!
I originally added this item as a comfort item, to try and provide some variety to my hydration options. I don’t know about you, but I have always found the taste of pure water to be well, bland. If I can spice it up, it is easier for me to convince myself to stay hydrated. So, I started looking for what I could add to my bag to provide some variety and I came across a product called ‘True Lemon’. True Lemon is just that, it is crystalized lemon. Their products typically come in two varieties; a ‘pure crystalized’ version, which is great for adding flavor to water or food, and a ‘lemonade’ version which adds a sweetener (stevia).
I buy these in bulk, because well, I have a lot of bags to distribute them through. You can get them on Amazon, of course, and here are some links:
The lemonade packets are ideal for adding to your water supply, and are a great pick-me-up on those multi-day trips when you start to get real bored with pure water. Here is a little hidden gem also… Kids love this stuff! On my last trip out I brought along a friend and his young son. This was the only way I could keep the little tyke hydrated. He just would not drink plain water.
This stuff is small, nearly weightless, and inexpensive. It is a great add-on to any bag.
